‘Russian Universities through the Eyes of Students’ Ranks SUM among the Best Universities in Russia
The State University of Management has been named among the top Russian 15 universities according to the results of an annual study based on student reviews.
The Social Navigator project from the RT international news agency and the Tabiturient project have presented their fifth annual ‘Russian Universities through the Eyes of Students’ study.
The list of top universities for 2020 includes 15 educational institutions: The State University of Management, the National Research Nuclear University MEPhI, RANEPA, SPbU, MGIMO, Moscow State Linguistic University, the Gubkin Russian State University of Oil and Gas, the Plekhanov Russian University of Economics, Saint Petersburg Electrotechnical University LETI, the Financial University under the Government of the Russian Federation, Novosibirsk State University, MIREA, Saint Petersburg Mining University, Bauman Moscow State Technical University and the Pavlov First Saint Petersburg State Medical University.
The 2020 study looked at 203 state universities in Russia. The project’s researchers processed over 2,100 pages of reviews, the authenticity of which was verified by more than 66,000 internet users and the website’s administration. The organisers of the study noted that more than 40% of the reviews submitted had been flagged as ‘bought’.
Commenting on the overall results of the study, head of the Tabiturient project Vladislav Belyy noted that there has been an increase in student dissatisfaction with their universities for the fifth year in a row. He added that this is the first year when the number of dissatisfied students exceeded the number of satisfied ones.
In terms of why that is, the first thing that comes to mind is that students have become more demanding. But when you start reading the reviews on our website, you realise that their demands are actually quite reasonable,
he noted.
The presentation also revealed that greatest number of negative reviews went to pedagogical universities, with negative reviews making up 66.1% of the total (and positive ones only 21.1%). Medical universities came second in terms of bad reviews, receiving 50.9% negative reviews and 31.1% positive. The smallest proportion of negative reviews (39.2%) was awarded to socio-economic universities, with positive reviews comprising 41.6%. Results for liberal arts universities were 44.5% negative to 42.8% positive, while reviews for technical universities were 42.8% negative and 38.1% positive.
Natalya Tyurina, the project manager of RT’s Social Navigator, highlighted the increase in the number of reviews and their improved quality.
This year, the responses are more balanced and better reflect what’s going on in universities. The issues raised in these reviews cover a huge range of aspects of various educational institutions. In my opinion, prospective students would find this information very useful while trying to choose the best university,
she said.
