The State University of Management Academic Council has adopted a new Regulation on the SUM Student Council. The amendments were initiated by the students themselves
Students of the State University of Management have proposed amendments to the Regulation on the Student Council. The university management supported the initiative and approved the new Regulation at a meeting of the SUM Academic Council.
The previous version of the document had been in effect since 2011. The university has undergone significant changes since then, including revisions to the role of its youth policy and changes to how the Students’ Union operates. These developments led to the creation of the Youth Policy and Educational Work.
As well as establishing a clear structure for the SUM Student Council, the new Regulation defines the goals and objectives of the constituent bodies of the Students’ Union bodies: the Board of the SUM Student Council and the Student Council of the Institute. The document also establishes the right of ‘free members’ to join the Board. The Student Council will be able to make proposals on improving SUM’s legal acts as well as participate in assessing the quality of the educational process and addressing issues of academic discipline and internal rule violations by students.
In addition, the Student Council has been granted the right to delegate a representative (Chairman) to the Academic Council to make SUM’s management system more open and democratic.
The document separately defines the basic rules for conducting elections to the bodies of the Students’ Union.
Of great importance to both the university and its students is the Academic Council’s approval of a Regulation on mentors selected from currently studying students. The main purpose of these mentors is to ‘integrate first-year students into the educational, scientific and extracurricular activities of SUM and its associations’. Student mentors are an important part of the educational process at SUM. Their goal is to help students adapt as quickly as possible and create the right conditions for personal growth and professional development.
The university has had student mentors since 2012, but there has been no Regulation governing their activities until now. The new document outlines mentors’ functions and goals. It also identifies priority issues for their competencies and their modes of interaction with the directorates of institutes and the SUM Youth Policy and Educational Work.
By doing so, the SUM Student Council and mentor programme will unite and govern students from all SUM institutes to effectively achieve the goals of the state youth policy.
