What Industrial Ecology Can Do during the Pandemic
On 3 June professors from SUM’s Chair of Economics and Management in the Energy Industry took part in the Ecology Forum as part of Russian Business Week 2020.
SUM professors Yakov Vishnyakov and Svetlana Kiseleva participated in the first session of the Ecology Forum, titled ‘Industrial Ecology in the Context of Anti-pandemic Measures’.
Industry causes some of the most significant adverse impact on the environment and human health. The rapid growth and development of industrial systems in the 20th and 21st centuries have caused substantial damage to the environment. Today the improvement of industrial processes and the implementation of effective environmental policy are key factors in ensuring the Russian economy’s competitiveness. Smart environmental solutions, programmes and events make it possible to reduce costs, boost profits and improve the image of companies, allowing them to operate effectively in both the domestic and international markets for products and services.
The meeting also addressed pressing economic and legal issues related to compliance with requirements in the field of industrial ecology, the terms of authorising documents concerning adverse impact on the environment and the need to update Russian industrial ecology legislation in the current climate. Special attention was given to the implementation of the ‘Environment’ national project as part of measures to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus.
Among vital problems in industrial ecology, the session focused on the monitoring of best available technologies in terms of environmental effectiveness, increasing producer liability (including in-house packaging recycling), the impact of the industry on the planet’s climate and the current targets of the ‘Environment’ national project.
The session was moderated by Yuriy Maximenko, Deputy Chair of the Committee for Environment and Nature Management of the Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs.
SUM’s ‘Environmental and Technological Safety and Rational Nature Management’ department aims to facilitate environmental education for the sustainable development of the industry. For example, the ‘Environmental Safety’ educational programme (in the field of ‘Environmental Safety in the Energy Sector’) was developed to promote the implementation of the ‘Environment’ national project.
