First Stage of Major Repairs at SUM Dormitories Completed

In 2019, the first of several stages of major repair work to SUM’s dormitories began. The decision was made to conduct the repairs systematically, floor-by-floor, with work beginning on the upper floors and gradually moving down through the floors.

General construction work has now finished, as have repairs to the heating, ventilation and lighting systems. Old equipment has been removed and replaced with the new equipment (electric stoves, kitchen tables, accessories for household appliances), the kitchens have been refurbished, and the alarm system has been updated. Wooden window frames in the dormitories have been partly replaced with modern PVC ones. Wi-Fi access is now available to students, and rooms have been equipped with new furniture.

Students returning to their newly-renovated rooms have remarked on the warm, homely atmosphere and significantly improved level of comfort.

Repair and construction work on technical and utilities floors has also been given top priority. The hot and cold water pipes, central heating system, boilers and mixing units have all been replaced.

The plan for 2020 is to progress to the lower floors of the dormitories. This will be carried out simultaneously with the replacement of window frames and stained-glass windows and repairs to facades and roofs.

The student dormitories at SUM consist of two multi-storey buildings with a total area of 36,516.2 square metres, and can house up to 2,074 students.

Dormitory No. 2 has 16 floors and was opened in 1976. Dormitory No. 6 has 18 floors and was built in 1987. While some window frames have been replaced and other cosmetic repairs have been carried out since the buildings were opened, these are the first major renovations done to the dormitories.
