Russian Students Demand that Trump Remove ‘Shameful Posts’ Regarding US Victory over Nazis

Student Parliamentary Clubs in Moscow are striving to draw world’s attention to a gross distortion of the historical record.

Activists of Moscow’s Student Parliamentary Clubs have written to US President Donald Trump and the US Embassy in Russia on the 75th anniversary of VE Day. In the letters, the young Russians demand that world history not be rewritten, and that shameful posts published by the White House’s official Twitter and Instagram accounts on 8 May be removed. The posts claim that the United States and Great Britain defeated the Nazis and that ‘America’s spirit will always win.’

‘We, as the youth of Russia and the successors of the Soviet Union, as the grandchildren of the true heroes of our Fatherland, as those who grew up keeping the memory alive of the true stories and pride of the heroism of the Soviet people, cannot ignore this despicable act by our American colleagues. Nobody has the right to rewrite world history!’,

said a youth organisation press release.

The activists stressed that the real victors are

the people who are still with us, living in our memory and in our hearts for as long as we honour and remember them. ‘Happy Victory Day!’,

concluded the students.

In their letter to US President Donald Trump and US Ambassador to Russia John Sullivan, the members of Moscow’s Student Parliamentary Clubs express their deep disappointment with the White House press service’s Twitter and Instagram posts about the victory in World War II.

‘According to the posts, the United States and Great Britain defeated the Nazis on 8 May 1945, while the role of the Soviet Union and other allies is completely excluded,’

said the activists.

‘We refute this account of our mutual victory and would like to remind everyone that the estimated number of Soviet casualties is 28 million, while the number of US casualties is less than one million. Furthermore, 75% of all Nazi forces fought on the Eastern Front. These facts make it impossible to forget the role played by the USSR and the Soviet casualties,’

added the representatives.

Finally, the activists urge US authorities not to allow any rewriting of shared history and express their hope that the White House press service will not allow such publications in the future.

‘We must respect our ancestors who fought together in World War II because without this respect there can be no true understanding between our peoples.’

the students concluded.

The official White House Twitter and Instagram accounts had earlier posted messages of congratulation. The messages stated that on 8 May 1945 the USA and Great Britain ‘had victory over the Nazis’.‘America’s spirit will always win. In the end, that’s what happens,’ the posts read. Neither the Soviet Union nor other US allies in the anti-Nazi coalition were mentioned.

On 7 May the Parliamentary Assembly of the Collective Security Treaty Organisation (PA CSTO) urged the Council of Europe countries to safeguard the historical truth about the Second World War. The statement made to European colleagues was signed by PA CSTO Chairman and State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin. ‘Europe should legally prevent attempts to revive Nazism and should fight against its supporters,’ said the statement.

Comments:

Christian Rakovsky-Samoilov, chairman of the Student Parliamentary Club of the State University of Management said,

‘When I saw this post, I was completely perplexed. To mislead people so brazenly is simply mean and disgusting. For some reason, it wasn’t mentioned that the Soviet Union sacrificed more than 20 million lives for this victory, that our people turned the tide of the war or that our people liberated Europe from its fascist occupiers.’

‘We, the activists of the Student Parliamentary Clubs, have decided to play an active part and write an official letter to Donald Trump and the US Ambassador to the Russian Federation Mr John J Sullivan.

‘We are grateful to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation for their support and look forward to further cooperation. The posts by the White House accounts should be removed immediately! Maybe they simply forgot history? We can give them a couple of lessons if needed.’
