SUM Experts Discuss the Challenges Facing Migrants During the COVID-19 Pandemic

SUM experts Vladimir Volokh and Vera Suvorova have taken part in the work of the Commission for Migration Affairs of the Council for Nationalities under the Government of Moscow. The event examined the challenges facing migrants in the current crisis as well as potential solutions to them.

The online meeting was held by the Commission for Migration Affairs of the Council for Nationalities under the Government of Moscow in association with the Moscow House of Nationalities. More than 50 people were in attendance, including members of the Commission and invited experts.

The main topics of discussion included the current socioeconomic situation, the end of the pandemic, and the assistance available to visitors to the country who are experiencing difficult personal circumstances due to the pandemic. 

The first report after the Chairman of the Commission’s speech was given by SUM professor Vladimir Volokh. Volokh’s report gives an overview of the migration situation in Russia during the COVID-19 pandemic and proposes a number of measures for coordinating the work of authorities during its final phase.

Chairman of the Commission, Project Director of the Dobrososedstvo Foundation and the Prognoz Information and Analytical Centre Yuriy Moskovskiy noted that ‘all the reports, speeches, and addresses given by the participants of this meeting will serve as practical recommendations for public authorities and public associations to prevent extremism and strengthen cooperation between civil institutions and Moscow authorities.’
