SUM Projects Qualify in Russian Volunteer 2020 Contest

Projects from the Luchik volunteer student group, EcoClub and the International Friendship Club have qualified for the regional quarter-finals of the Russian Volunteer 2020 contest.

Team Luchik was nominated in the Helping Children category. Volunteers have been working with the Nash Dom (Our Home) social and rehabilitation centre for minors for a number of years. The Luchik Talent Accelerator project aims to expand the horizons of children by providing career guidance, developing communication skills and helping children discover and develop their interests.

Volunteers from the International Friendship Club submitted their Peoples’ Friendship Festival project for the ‘Around Me’ category of the contest. For eight years, the Festival has been a SUM tradition that brings people from various backgrounds together in a shared event. The Festival’s motto for 2020 (‘the year of Memory and Glory’) reads Friendship Empowered Us against Nazism. The goal of the project is not only to bring different people residing and studying at SUM together but also to foster connections between different generations and preserve the memory of the heroic deeds carried out by our ancestors and the role of friendship and support between people.

The Vladimir Vernadsky EcoClub project was included in the ‘Sure Future’ category. The project aims to draw the attention of SUM students and employees to environmental issues through educational and interactive green events. As part of the project, containers for separating waste and further recycling were installed on the SUM campus. The Club team believes that the introduction of separate waste collection and the development of an environmentally conscious mindset among members of the SUM community can foster a green culture, conscious consumption and eco-friendly habits. EcoClub has experience conducting similar events, such as campaigns to collect waste paper. The Club collected over one tonne of recyclable materials during its November 2019 campaign and more than two tonnes in March 2020.
