SUM Student Parliamentary Club Meets Representatives of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation

Friday 14 February was a particularly eventful day for Moscow’s student parliamentary clubs. The SUM Student Parliamentary Club met with representatives of both chambers of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation. The meetings with Senator Inna Yuryevna Svyatenko and Deputy of the State Duma Peter Olegovich Tolstoy enabled the discussion of a wide range of pressing and topical issues.

The first event of the afternoon was a meeting with journalist, producer, TV presenter and Deputy of the State Duma Peter Tolstoy. More than 300 students from various Moscow student parliamentary clubs attended the meeting, which addressed the recent amendments to the Constitution and questions regarding their necessity and expediency. The meeting was held at the Centre for Professional and Career Development in the heart of Moscow. Family issues were a particular focus for the students. Topics included the family model and current and future benefits for families with children. The group also discussed the necessity and content of the law on domestic violence. The meeting also examined contemporary issues in national school education, namely the lack of sex education for today’s youth and the challenge of teaching history during a period of revisionism.

In the evening, the students met with Inna Yuryevna Svyatenko, member of the Federation Council and the Moscow City Duma. The meeting took place in Maryino district. Topics of discussion ranged from the nuances of social policy and healthcare to the issues faced by the city in general. Participants were particularly eager to discuss recent changes to the maternity allowance scheme and other measures to solve Russia’s demographic problem.

According to Khristian Rakovskiy-Samoylov, Chairman of the SUM Student Parliamentary Club, such meetings help establish effective lines of cooperation between the authorities and everyday citizens, preventing a multitude of issues at the local and the national levels.
