SUM Students and Professors Unite for Blood Donor Day
On 23 September, the State University of Management held the traditional annual event: Blood Donor Day. Volunteers joined forces to help save the lives of other people.
210 people took part in the campaign. Each of them had their own reasons: some had always wanted to join the blood donor community and spent a lot of time studying the history of blood donation in Russia, while others came for the first time. Over 100 litres of blood were collected during the event.
‘There are very few blood donors in Russia: only ten in 1,000 people, according to statistics. I think Blood Donor Day helps make up for that. Last year, unfortunately, I couldn’t take part in the campaign as I was still under 18. Today I can, so I’ve decided to donate my blood. I was a little nervous, but everything went very well. I would like to thank all the doctors and medical assistants for their patience and hard work,’ said second-year student Valeria Lubakova from the Institute of Economics and Finance.
Quite a few participants were interested in the specifics of the blood donation process.
‘My friends invited me to join them for Blood Donor Day. I’m 18, and it’s the first time I’ve taken part in the campaign. I wasn’t scared at all. And I’ll definitely come again next time,’ said Dmitry Kechin, a first-year student of the Institute of Information Systems.
New blood donors join the event every year. Some believe it is their civic duty, whereas others come for personal reasons. Whatever the case, the donated blood will serve to help the society, help save someone’s life or assist with recovery.
‘I believe donating blood is a social mission for students, and they should do it at least once a year. The State University of Management has already been a platform for municipal and federal healthcare projects in the past, so Blood Donor Day at SUM is an event that unites everyone interested in the cause,’ said Georgy Tarkhanovsky, Curator of the Students’ Union.
