SUM Students Assess the Place and Role of Life Safety Knowledge in the Modern World

Safety is a basic human need, and the ability to preserve health and life is of vital importance to us all. Any human activity can be potentially dangerous due to various negative natural, man-made, social or other factors. Emergencies can cause damage to the environment, human life, health, property and the economy. At the present stage of our civilisation’s development, risk management and safeguarding socio-economic and socio-political systems as well as natural and man-made systems form the basis of national security and sustainable development. Security and counter-terrorism are named a key focus in the List of Priority Development Areas in Science, Technology and Engineering in the Russian Federation (approved by Decree of the President of the Russian Federation No. 899 dated 7 July 2011). Health and Safety (H&S) is a fundamental discipline in higher education for specialists of any kind.

The State University of Management is a modern university that pays considerable attention to providing and analysing feedback between teaching staff, administrative staff and the students. To determine the attitude of SUM students to H&S and their understanding of its professional, personal and social significance, SUM professor Svetlana Kiseleva and SUM postgraduate student Sergey Pukhov conducted a survey in January 2020. The survey was conducted among full-time first-year SUM students studying in several different specialisations (a total of 208 people).

The results of the survey revealed the following information:

  • 86% of the surveyed students rated the importance of H&S in personal, social and professional life as ‘high’ and ‘very high’.
  • The vast majority of the surveyed students (93%) have a better understanding of the importance of H&S for an individual, society and the state compared to their understanding of these issues after studying H&S at school.
  • 89% of the surveyed students rated H&S classes as ‘interesting’ and ‘very interesting’.
  • Almost all of the students could understand the material presented during these classes (76% of the students understood the material completely).
  • 70% of the students rated the adequacy of computer usage during the classes as ‘high’ and ‘adequate’.
  • According to the students, topics requiring additional study time include: First Aid in Various Situations (topic 19), Survival in Extreme Situations (topic 21), Acting in Response to Natural Disasters (topic 12), Ensuring Fire Safety in Various Areas of Life (topic 7).
  • According to the vast majority of the students (89%), it is important to develop basic knowledge in the classroom (knowledge of first aid, fire safety etc) with the use of specialised equipment (safety dummies, fire extinguishers etc).

Over its 25 years of operation, the staff the Environmental Management and Safety Department have always focused on improving the quality of education. The department’s staff meets all the current requirements for professors teaching Health and Safety: they regularly undergo advanced professional training programmes, participate in scientific research and publish scientific and educational works in leading journals and publications on the topic of health and safety. Textbooks and learning guides prepared by the staff of the Environmental Management and Safety Department are used by students at a number of universities in Moscow and other regions of Russia. The H&S textbook and learning guide team (led by Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor Yakov Vishnyakov) has received many awards and commendations for its significant contributions to improving the quality of higher education, its professionalism and its work writing textbooks for Russian universities.

More detailed information on the results of the survey is available in this section of the Environmental Management and Safety Department website.
