The State University of Management to develop digital literacy programmes for the elderly

They will be available to users of the Digital Volunteers open educational platform.

Specialists from SUM’s UNESCO Chair ‘Societal, Legal and Ethical Frameworking of Knowledge Societies’ will develop programmes to promote digital literacy for people of pre-retirement and retirement age. They will be available to users of the Digital Volunteers open educational platform, Svetlana Malkarova, SUM Vice Rector and Executive Director of SUM’s UNESCO Chair, told TASS on Wednesday.

SUM’s UNESCO Chair has launched a project to create a digital educational platform offering free access to content and providing the opportunity to create individual learning paths using artificial intelligence technologies. The project target audience includes four clusters: schoolchildren, students, professionals and people of pre-retirement and retirement age. The authors of the project will pay particular attention to the development of specialised digital literacy programmes for people of pre-retirement and retirement age; they will be offered educational content on the basics of using computers and smartphones and protecting against fraudsters and cyber threats when making electronic payments,

the UNESCO Chair Executive Director told TASS.

The platform’s developers believe that the elderly are not always able to find the information they need for using digital technology. SUM’s UNESCO Chair plans to create step-by-step courses for older adults to overcome these barriers without the help of their grandchildren or teachers. The platform will also offer its users an intelligent selection of content of interest in the area of digital competency, foreign language learning and many other disciplines.

Many people over the age of fifty continue to develop themselves and expand their skills. This is not just about mastering new gadgets or Skype. Many professional fields require constant self-education. For example, Russian academics participating in international research and conferences should have an equally good command of both Russian and English vocabulary in their field. The Digital Volunteers platform can offer courses specifically for them focusing, for example, on the specifics of learning medical or technical English,

SUM’s press service explained to TASS.

Digital Volunteers

The Digital Volunteers open educational platform launched at SUM in January 2019 is a project of the UNESCO Chair ‘Societal, Legal and Ethical Frameworking of Knowledge Societies’. It aims to achieve the goals of UNESCO’s Medium-Term Strategy for 2014–2021, including the strengthening of science, technology and innovation systems and policies at national, regional and global levels.

‘The idea of digital volunteering is that volunteers help everyone, including people with limited access to higher education, obtain relevant knowledge through online platforms with constantly updated content. During the first stage, the platform developers plan to test it with the help of SUM students. In the future, it will be available to users from any country as the content will be published in Russian and English.

In addition, developers plan to constantly improve the internet aggregator to adapt it to the needs of several categories of users, including schoolchildren, students, professionals and people of pre-retirement age. In the future, it will be possible to group content on the website to create personal development programmes in the desired discipline.

The Digital Volunteers platform will be launched at the Third International Scientific Forum Stepping into the Future: Artificial Intelligence and Digital Economy to be held in Moscow on 9–10 December under the umbrella of the Commission of the Russian Federation for UNESCO with the support of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation. This event is part of the SUM centenary celebration programme.
